A business can only grow when its employees help build it. And the employees can only do so when they have the appropriate skill set to competently tackle each task thrown in their way. Employee performance coaching uses various techniques that stimulate employees to garner their existing skills, learn new skills, and reach their full potential. However, it is still an uncommon practice as most companies still do not actively use employee performance coaching. But when accomplished, it can be highly beneficial to the company and its talents.

Let us learn five tips for effective employee performance coaching-

Tip #1- Build a Coaching Culture: Most businesses don’t actively practice employee performance coaching because they do not have an environment where employees can trust their employer. The first step to effective employee performance coaching is to build a coaching culture in your organization where-

  • People trust each other.

  • Everyone can question the status quo.

  • Everyone is willing to co-create.

  • Individuals have a growth mindset.

  • People are willing to help each other.

Tip #2- Coach Your Senior Managers: Most employees only look at the managers as, well, managers. It makes it difficult for a manager to become a coach and help initiate effective employee performance coaching. It is preferred first to coach your managers and senior roles on becoming better coaches. You may need external help for this step, but it is critical.

Tip #3- Identify Performance Improvement Opportunities: Every individual has a different skill set and a working style. Hence, you cannot use a similar approach for everyone. It is a beneficial practice to identify performance improvement opportunities where you can and fix them right then. Every company has excellent performers and underachievers. Employee performance coaching focuses on both types to help them improve their productivity.

Tip #4- Discuss the Action Plan Together: When you identify performance improvement opportunities, you should sit with your team and devise solutions together. This creates trust and allows everyone to present their own way of approaching the issue. Even though your entire team needs to learn the same skills, their ways of obtaining the competencies may differ.

Tip #5- Show Support: As discussed before, an organization with a healthy coaching culture will be ready to support and help each other with their problems and excel in the workplace. Performance coaching becomes a shared responsibility when the support comes from everyone, including the managers, HRs, and fellow team members. You can show your support to your employees by-

  • Showing your trust in them.

  • Asking them if they are facing any troubles in the workplace and if you can help them.
